i have fair skin and green eyes, and i love using the eyeshadow ';honeylust'; on my whole eyelid and putting ';creme de violet'; on the outer half of my lid. ask the people who work there to recommend some colors, they're usually always willing to help and know what to pick! good luck, i love their stuff!

i also just got the dazzleglass in ';smile'; which looks great with my skin.

Green/Natural Cosmetic Samples?

I'm looking for online stores that offer green/natural cosmetic samples. Do you know of any? Thanks!Green/Natural Cosmetic Samples?
Hi, many mineral makeup companies are natural bc they use all natural ingredients. some of them go a step futher to ensure they collect such ingredients in an earth-friendly manner.

and almost all of them give out samples for a very small price. Pure anada is promising and offers the best coverage out of all those that i've tried and did not cause as much shine. EDM is cheaper in terms of the price, and the coverage is not as good, but still very good for the price (just use concealer) -- and use a good primer to stop the oilies!

Try everydayminerals.com, they give free samples.

Which store is cheaper to buy cosmetics at: Wal-mart, Wal-greens, Rite-Aid, CVS/Pharmacy, or Target?

You can also specify by brands, if you want to.Which store is cheaper to buy cosmetics at: Wal-mart, Wal-greens, Rite-Aid, CVS/Pharmacy, or Target?
Walgeens or Target.

Target vs. Walmart = Target/CheaperWhich store is cheaper to buy cosmetics at: Wal-mart, Wal-greens, Rite-Aid, CVS/Pharmacy, or Target?
probably walmart
for base make-up like foundations compacts, concealers and such you are best off with a higher end brand. i like neutragena. but for lipsticks, glosses, liners, shadows, bronzers, and such you can save a lot of money going with the cheaper stuff. I love NYC, there stuff is cheap and is just as good as the expensive brands. as for stores, walmart and target will have cheaper stuff then the pharmacies.
Wal-Mart. I have found that all beauty %26amp; health items are the cheapest there.

I hope that I helped out a little bit. It麓s good that you麓re doing some research first, because my friend bought some really cheap ones and now her vision is really bad. Just remember that when it comes to cosmetic contacts that what you pay for is what you get. If you have to pay a lot for it, then it麓s totally worth it. Also, if you ask your eye doctor about it, he/she might have some good info on it too.

Good luck! :)

Hot topic! Has so many colors i have bright blue, hot pink, green, red, purple, and they have a lot of stuff i have glow and the dark nail polish from there tooWhere can i find neon, flourecent, or uv racting cosmetics in the usa?and also crazy lipsticks(blue, green, etc)?
To begin with, what is your budget?

Because (good) make-up can get expensive real quick.

M.A.C. and Make-Up Forever are my faves(the websites will tell you where they are sold in the US). They are top professional quality and the pigment ratio is high.

For bright nail polish, there are very cheap options available to you in a dollar store, for example.

urban decay has great colors and eyeliners.

hot topic has good nail polish.

mac has weird eyeshadow colors
the dollar store... or vagisil is glo in the dark so if u rub it on ur face it will work just great

  • Would permanent cosmetics and high tech skin care be more ';green'; or Earth friendly than cosmetics?

That is a good way of looking at it. Yes, I imagine that if people use permanent makeup, there is less consumption in makeup.

Which is cheaper to buy cosmetics: Wal-greens, wal-mart, or other?

Also do dollar tree cosmetics have as good of a quality as wal-mart?Which is cheaper to buy cosmetics: Wal-greens, wal-mart, or other?
Wal-mart is much cheaper than Target, K-mart etc...Walgreens is more unless it's on sale...they do buy one get one free sales, so then it's cheaper...try the Rimmel line...carried in all of those stores...it's great quality and cheap..Don't buy from dollar tree, that stuff is crappy.Which is cheaper to buy cosmetics: Wal-greens, wal-mart, or other?
Wal-Mart beats anything in price, but i trust Walgreens more if you're gonna buy stuff at drugstores.

I recommend higher end stuff, like Chanel Lancome or Mac.

    They're really worth the money.
    try target
i think that walgreens have the cheapest cosmetics.malmart have cheap cosmetics but depends on what kind.
Target or Wal-Mart, I realized the other day that cosmetics at Walgreen's are more expensive than other drugstores. For example, Great Lash Mascara at Target is 3.99 and at Walgreen's it's 5.79.
walmart is cheaper than walgreens. dollar tree is cheaper than both. dollar tree carries brands by loreal and maybelline. those are the only brands that i would buy because i trust those brands. i wont buy off brand cosmetics because they dont have the quality that i am looking for it makeup.

What are some earth-friendly or green cosmetic brands?

I'm looking for something that I can purchase at Wal-Mart or Target.....What are some earth-friendly or green cosmetic brands?
I don't think they sell earth-friendly cosmetics at those stores.....some brand names that i use are avalon organics, burt bee's (target might have some of this brand), and if there's a macy's near you (it's a little more expensive) - ';philosophy'; is a great skin-care/makeup line - if your stores don't have these brands you can always order them online - usually you can find a website with either free shipping or sales to even out the shipping expense - the website i use is gaiam.com - they also have household products, cleaning products and organic clothes....What are some earth-friendly or green cosmetic brands?
i do not think that either of the stores you mentioned carry ';green'; cosmetics. however, cargo (at sephora) now makes their lipstick tubes out of corn, so they are biodegradable. and target carries cleaning supplies by the brand method, which is great.
There pretty much is none that you could buy at Wal*Mart or Target. However, Revlon doesn't test on animals %26amp; that's at both stores! %26lt;3

Where can I buy ';Green Touch'; cosmetics in India ?

  • 25+ years ago,a major mall store(?) housed a stand-alone french line of cosmetics. Anyone remember the name?

The store was in the Altamonte Mall in Altamonte Springs, Florida. I actually worked for the line for a while but can't remember the name. They had the best liquid foundation and I occasionally wonder if they are still around. I would love to buy the foundation again. byeHi!!! What do you think about the french make up and french cosmetic?
Americans love French cosmetics but all of the major French brands are already sold over here. Your best bet is to begin with artisanal products and sell them over the internet to see if there is a market. You could set up that kind of online business from France.Hi!!! Do you know that luxury goods as French designer clothes, cosmetics and fragrances are made in China?

How can we pay so much when all the famous brands fabrics are in China? http://www.**********************/

Are we cheated?Do you know that luxury goods as French designer clothes, cosmetics and fragrances are made in China?
If any of the items that you are talking about were actually made in France they would be exorbitantly over priced even worse then they are now! You would not believe how many things are made in China and stamped France just because they are assembled in France!

I happen to represent a line from France and it is made in France but it is a very high end item with the quality that matches.

Most of the factories in China make items for both high end and low end items, they just label them different! Some of the time they are identical. Americans are ';label'; junkies and will pay for a designers name no matter what the item is or how bad it is made. You are better off paying money for quality rather then names.

Make up it a big offender of designer rip offs, most of make up is made in the same factories!

Don't get me wrong, there are many good items that come out of China and the reason that they chose to make them there is the cost, if they were made here they would be too expensive for the average consumer.

Luxury is all relative, do you pay for some designers name (and usually they have nothing to do with many of their labeled items, they sell their name) or do you pay for a quality item that has a unknown name?

Fakes, copies and knock offs also keep the prices high on luxury items and they are made in China? So, it is China who is making all the money!!!Do you know that luxury goods as French designer clothes, cosmetics and fragrances are made in China?
The price of the brand name goods are not set by the factory! The company, who owned brand, is the biggest winner! They want to earn more profit by selling their products at the same price level, then they give the manufacturing job to China. Cuz Chinese labour force is cheap!!!! Your attacking target is wrong.

Why are so many things made in China?

    http://ask.jongo.com/qa/detail.jng?id=18鈥?/a>
what isn't made in China ?
Most of the consumer goods we use as Americans are make in China and Asia in general. Not to mention Mexico and South America. Americans lose jobs over this crap.

  • Name of a French cosmetic lavender cream for chapped skin?

Years ago, when I was in England, a beautician gave me a small sample jar of a thick lavender based cream to ease wind-burned skin. I remember that it was a French name but that's it. I had googled them years ago %26amp; found the website but lost it since.

Mary Kay compares to French cosmetics?

A friend of mine is trying to persuade me to try Mary Kay. I have always preferred the French name brands. Clarins and Estee Lauder are my favorites. Any insights on how the brands compare?Mary Kay compares to French cosmetics?
Well it always puzzles me as to why people are hesitant to try something new after all it washes off. Mary Kay is all about trying before you buy and 100% guarantee so you cant lose to try it then you can decide for yourself. Some people stick with a brand for the name and prefer paying more for the name if the product are really working for you and you are completely happy then stick with them.

I have been using Mary Kay for 10 years I used Department store brands prior matter of fact I worked in department store so I know the quality and like anything it really is 2 fold preference and quality are different to each person. I know many people including my mother who switched from Estee to Mary KayMary Kay compares to French cosmetics?
Actually Marykay is not compared to drug store cosmetics. Its right up there with Estee Lauder. The only difference is Marykay prices are lower for the same great product! Marykay puts more than advertisement into their product, they actually care about the people using them. So they make them affordable. You should try the product. If your not satisfied with results then you make your decision. At least thats my opinion, you do not know anything until you experience it.
Mary Kay has some high quality makeup. This doesn't mean it will be the same as the department store brands that you are used to. It will probably be alot cheaper, too.

I was once a fan of Mary Kay, but now im an AVON customer, and I must say, I have bought hundreds (literally) of makeup items from them, and only had to return two. I returned one (foundation) because it was the wrong color, and i returned the other (face cream) because I didn't like it (very moisturizing, but i have combination skin. i prefer a lighter cream).

AVON is much cheaper than Mary Kay, and has a MUCH bigger selection.

Check out the websites, and contact a few representatives that live near you. Hey, if youre not happy, you can always return the products and go back to the department store makeup.

    Good luck!
ROTFLMAO! Mary Kay is not even close. Mary Kay is like a top line drugstore brand but can not even be in the same room and department store brands. I would say your friend is just trying to make a buck off of you and for a ';friend to do that is just NOT cool. I think I would find a new friend.

Are we really a vain society? Do we really have a more-than-normal pride in our appearance? To answer that, you’d have to define normal. There’s nothing wrong with being vain, as long as we don’t get carried away with it. We just want to look good – to look our best. And people have been working hard at looking their best for centuries. And that’s why cosmetics has such a long history. We’d like to take you through the history of cosmetics here; and let’s just see how similar we are to people living in 10,000 BC.

Ancient Egyptians had a full line of cosmetics

Have you ever seen pictures of the Ancient Egyptians, with their painted faces? They look very striking, don’t they? Very classic. And that was the intent. It was extremely important to them that they looked and smelled good, because the old expression “cleanliness is next to Godliness” is that old – they believed it very strongly.

The Egyptians were very spiritual people, and believed their appearance was directly related to their level of spirituality. And so they needed to find ways to make themselves look at least presentable, if not fabulous.

The Egyptians were also very resourceful people. Some of the things they came up with were very innovative, even by today’s standards. And cosmetics was one of those things. They had a knack for developing natural formulas to solve their skin challenges. Would you believe that around the fifteenth to the tenth centuries BC, they had cosmetic products that would get rid of stretch marks, shrink wrinkles, get rid of scars, and make hair grow?

That’s amazing, when you look at the line of products that’ll do those same jobs today. And today, we seem to need all kinds of research and development programs to come up with the same thing. Perhaps there’s something to be said for natural cosmetics after all.

Some of the other cosmetics the Ancient Egyptians used were eye makeup, face creams and body oils, as well as a wide array of perfumes and fragrances.

The Egyptians really knew how to mix ingredients

All these cosmetics that the Egyptians used had to come from somewhere. Well, it’s the old story of “necessity is the mother of invention”. Because there was so much emphasis on looking good, Egyptian women had to find a way to do it. And one of the things they came up with was something called mesdemet.

Mesdemet was made of copper and lead ore – not the safest thing to be constantly putting on your face, but it did the job. They applied green to their lower eyelids, then black or dark gray to their eyelashes and upper eyelids. And keeping with their spiritual beliefs, the dark colors were designed not only to enhance their appearance, but to ward off evil eyes.

And an evil eye wasn’t the only thing mesdemet warded off. It was a great disinfectant, as well as an insect repellant. And with life on the Nile being fairly filled with annoying insects, the eye makeup performed a dual purpose. So the combinations of ingredients that made up their cosmetics, were very diverse. In fact, many were used for all kinds of medicinal purposes, too.

Now how’s this for a combination: burnt almonds, oxidized copper, a couple of different-colored copper ores, lead, ash, and ochre. They called it kohl, and it came out as a dark-colored powder, which was applied with a small stick, on and around the eyes, in an almond shape. Then, to complement the fancy eye makeup, they applied a mixture of red clay and water to their lips and cheeks. And the nails weren’t left out, either. They used henna to dye them orange or yellow. Quite a colorful picture, don’t you think? But that’s exactly what they wanted back then – something like today, perhaps?

And the Egyptians weren’t good at just putting together natural products. Some research done by L’Oreal, along with scientists from the Louvre in Paris, revealed that the black eye makeup used back then had ingredients that had to have been chemically made, because a natural origin couldn’t be found. The research also showed that mesdemet got its creamy smoothness from its 7-10% fat content. That’s just the same as many of the eye cosmetic products on the market today. Are we really advanced, or just living in the past?

The purpose of cosmetics hasn’t really changed over the years

Way back – I mean, way back – like in 10,000 BC, cosmetics were used to enhance the beauty of the female countenance. And by the way, men used them, too. Back then, all Egyptians bathed either in the river or from a basin at home. They used cosmetic cleansers made from vegetable or animal oil mixed with powdered lime and perfume – probably not much different from some of the soaps we use today.

Also, the air was very hot and dry in those days and the people needed something to keep their skin soft. So they used one of a number of perfumed oils to protect themselves from the climate.

As time progressed, through invasions and migrations, cultures merged, and that had a profound effect on the value of cosmetics. Remember, the Egyptians held a strong connection between their cosmetic makeup and their spirituality. However, when the much more liberal Greeks moved in, ideas about cosmetics changed. The actual use of cosmetics didn’t decrease at all, but their connection with spirituality did.

The Greeks use of cosmetics was predominantly – well, cosmetic. They were still interested in looking good, but not for the gods – for each other. So they adopted the Egyptian cosmetic practices and products.

But then, centuries later, the Romans moved in, with their life of frivolity and debauchery. The Egyptians’ cosmetic formulas were used for even less spiritual purposes, like aphrodisiacs. However, vanity was still an issue, so cosmetics still had a place on the face – and on the rest of the body, too. It was said by one Roman, a man named Platus, that “a woman without paint is like food without salt.”

The Romans’ lifestyle definitely had no boundaries, and that included the source of their cosmetics. For example, they used fat from a sheep, mixed with blood, for nail polish. And they left no doubt as to their priorities in life when they took baths in mud, mixed with crocodile excrement. Yuck!

The pale face was the norm for centuries

Through many centuries, a pale face was the desired look because it defined your place in society. It was recognized that those who worked in the fields had tanned and rugged skin. They were the working class, not to be associated with the upper refined class, who had white skin. Those with pale skin were the ones who had enough money that they didn’t need to work.

And to achieve that look, women and men used a powder made of hydroxide, carbonate, and lead oxide. Unfortunately, there was a price to pay for looking “proper” – lead poisoning. That’s why an alternative was sought. And they found it, in the 19th century – a facial powder made of zinc oxide. And that’s what they still use today.

As the cosmetic industry moved into Hollywood in the 20th century, the white face look was gradually replaced by the tanned look. And that became the source of a whole new line of cosmetic products – artificial tanners. In 1929, there were ads running for tanning liquid and powder. If you couldn’t get a tan naturally, then you could still have bronze skin with tanning aids.

Cosmetics are used for that younger look

During the Edwardian society days, around 1900, middle-aged women did a lot of entertaining. And as hostesses, they had to look their best, which to them, meant looking as young as possible. These society women needed all the help they could get to offset the effects of their high lifestyles. They didn’t eat very healthy foods, and they didn’t exercise, plus the air pollution was heavy at that time. To “preserve their youth” and make up for their extravagant lifestyles, Edwardian women relied on cosmetics, especially face creams and anti-ageing products.

Another way women got themselves to look naturally young and attractive was to go to the beauty salon. One of the most famous of those salons was the House of Cyclax in London. Because the women didn’t want people to know that they needed help to look beautiful, they sneaked in the back door of the salon. Their carriages would pull up in the laneway, they’d quickly hop out, wearing a veil to hide their complexions, and scurry in the back door.

Mrs. Henning, the owner of the House of Cyclax, discreetly sold face creams and rouge to the ladies. One of her products, papier poudre, was a colored-powdered paper that the women pressed on their faces to remove the shine. The pieces of paper came in books, and you can still buy them today; one company that sells them is Avon. As well as the papier poudre, the women used the charcoal on the end of burned matches for mascara, and flower petals for lipstick. Now those are natural cosmetics!

Another beauty salon owner, Helena Rubenstein, found herself very busy with her upper-class clients. Women with disposable income were willing to spend a lot of money on their appearance. Helena Rubenstein started out with a face cream that protected the women from the sun, and later added lipstick and face powder. Today, there’s a full line of cosmetics available from Helena Rubenstein.

The cosmetics industry takes off in the 20th century

As the popularity of beauty salons increased, in the beginning of the 20th century, the cosmetics industry became established – and it’s never looked back. Starting with a salon called Selfridges, which opened in 1909 in London, cosmetics were no longer hidden under the counter, but were sold on the open market. Women became more confident, and didn’t worry as much about what others thought – as long as they looked good.

If you can think of makeup application as an art, then perhaps you’ll understand that one of the biggest influences on the cosmetic industry was actually the performing arts – ballet, to be specific. When the Russian Ballet came to London, a designer named Paul Poiret took the Russian style and created a whole new look – a much more colorful look. And that look was reflected in cosmetics, not just clothing.

Now those society hostesses didn’t have to make all those trips to the beauty salon. They now had permanent cosmetics at their disposal. They could have their lips, cheeks and eyebrows tattooed, with vivid color that didn’t fade and didn’t have to be replaced. Permanent cosmetics are fairly popular today, too.

As the years wore on, cosmetic use came and went. During the 1930s, lipstick was dark red, with an ever-changing array of shades. But that was bad news for the philanderers – the dark lipstick left a distinct stain, and many wives were looking for explanations for the “lipstick on the collar”. At the same time, fingernails followed suit with the lipstick, with their dark crimson colors. But that was contrasted by the lighter pink of the toenails.

Around World War II, the use of cosmetics dwindled a bit because of shortages of ingredients to make them. But as soon as the war was over, people started spending money again. Now women could buy all the makeup they wanted. And the competition was heating up, too.

The cosmetics industry becomes the foundation of fashion

Throughout the last few decades, women’s choices of cosmetics greatly increased. There were many companies selling many kinds of makeup. Cosmetics now included eye makeup, like mascara, eye shadow and eye liner; facial cleansing systems, including cleanser, toner and moisturizer; nail polish, every color and design you can think of; lotions, lipsticks, skincare products, powders – the list goes on and on. Perhaps that’s why cosmetics is a multi-billion dollar industry today.

There are so many players in the cosmetics game now, like Colosé, Estee Lauder, Elizabeth Arden, Mac Cosmetics, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Avon, Clinique, L’Oreal, Bobbi Brown cosmetics, Victoria Jackson cosmetics – everybody’s getting into the picture with their own lines.

And the winner of this cosmetic game is you, the consumer. Whatever type of look you want, whether it’s to cover up, emphasize, illuminate, minimize, enhance or perfect – any look you want can be had with the help of today’s cosmetics.

Cosmetics are products that sell, even when there’s a recession. Women will always find the money for their makeup. And the men don’t mind. After all, they’re the ones who benefit from those good looks. They’re the ones who’ve appreciated the efforts that women have gone to throughout the years, to make themselves “presentable”.

So, men, look back and thank the ancient Egyptians for their sometimes “weird” formulas they used to enhance the beauty of their women. Many of their ideas have lived through the ages. And now you get to enjoy those ideas as they’ve culminated into the cosmetics of today. And all you can do is greet your special lady, with her perfectly-applied cosmetics, and say, “Wow!”

    A brief history of Cosmetics?

Many believe the ancient egyptians were the first to use makeup. Although we know the Egyptians possessed the equivalent of our rouge, lip-gloss and nail polish, these were used only upon occasion, apparently as a matter of personal preference, style and fashion. The ancient Egyptian tradition of outlining the eyes with pigment to create an almond or feline shape and the importance placed upon this practice, however, transcends the Western concept of eye makeup. ';Makeup'; to modern Westernized ears has the ring of something frivolous, something optional. Although cosmetics were certainly used for the purpose of beautification, in ancient Egypt, eye makeup did more than paint a pretty face.

As we have seen to be typical of the ancient Egyptians, they took a truly holistic approach to the concept of eye makeup. Not only was it decorative and ornamental, the practice also served medicinal, magical and spiritual practices.

The Egyptians used two types of eye makeup:

    · Udju was made from green malachite (green ore of copper) from Sinai. Sinai and its mines were considered under the spiritual dominion of Hathor, ancient goddess of beauty, joy, love and women. She bore the epithet ';Lady of Malachite.';

    · Mesdemet, a dark gray ore of lead, was derived from either stibnite (antimony sulphide) or, more typically, galena (lead sulphide.) Galena was found around Aswan and on the Red Sea Coast. It was also among the materials brought back by Pharaoh Hatshepsut's famed expedition to Punt and was given in tribute by Asiatic nomads.

Late Eighteenth Century Return to Nature

By the French Revolution of 1789 fashion changes developing since 1775 took effect. The new female hair fashion was to wear a wig of arranged curling coils on top of the head letting the natural hair fall loosely down the nape of the neck.

As the 18th century came to a close, all things Roman were in fashion with cropped simple hairstyles. This was soon replaced by a vogue for all styles Greek and the simplicity of freshly washed hair copied from Greek vases was thought attractive.

    Victorian Delicacy

Women in the 19th century liked to be thought of as fragile ladies. They compared themselves to delicate flowers and emphasised their delicacy and femininity. They aimed always to look pale and interesting. Paleness could be induced by drinking vinegar and avoiding fresh air. Sometimes ladies discreetly used a little rouge on the cheeks, but make-up was frowned upon in general especially during the 1870s when social etiquette became more rigid.

Actresses however were allowed to use make up and famous beauties such as Sarah Bernhardt and Lillie Langtry famous beauties of the 1880s could be powdered. Most cosmetic products available were still either chemically dubious, or found in the kitchen amid food colourings, berries and beetroot.

A pale skin was a mark of gentility. It meant that a lady could afford to not work outdoors getting suntanned which was then considered vulgar and coarse. Continuous work in sun and harsh weather coarsened the skin then, as it does now. Parasols were de rigueur and used to protect the complexion. Rooms were shuttered with dark heavy velvet curtains to keep out the sun's rays. Some effort was made keep the décolleté neckline in good condition as it was often exposed in evening dress. Fine blue lines would be painted on the skin to increase the appearance of delicate translucent skin showing veins.

During this time it was thought that a woman's crowning glory was her hair. It was rarely cut, usually only in severe illness. It was also supplemented by false hair depending on the current fashion.

After 1886, Harriet Hubbard Ayer promoted face creams and various anti-ageing products. Before that, little that was satisfactory had been available.

    Edwardian Beauties

It often surprises people to learn that it was the dowagers and matrons of Edwardian high society who were also the fashion leaders of Edwardian society.

Many an Edwardian society hostess in middle age was in urgent need of the help of cosmetics and by 1900 face enamelling was once again beginning to be accepted among society ladies. The Edwardian society hostess's complexion, ravaged by age, a high carbohydrate diet, spasmodic exercise, combined with living in a dirty polluted atmosphere was far from radiant. Queen Alexandra flaunted her make-up and shocked and amused observers. But she epitomized the feminine ideal of the Naughty Nineties. Ladies were more discreet and despite a gradual acceptance of make-up in the 1890s, it was still considered 'not nice' to admit to its use.

    ~

    The House of Cyclax

Ladies of society liked to preserve the myth of being naturally beautiful. A Mrs. Henning, who owned a beauty salon in South Molton Street, London, which later became the House of Cyclax, had a special back door for embarrassed clients. Heavily veiled, a lady would hurriedly alight from her carriage and disappear into the discreet entrance.

Initially Mrs. Henning sold creams plus three shades of rouge. Hostesses also used 'papier poudre' (still available from Avon and at some make up counters today). 'Papier poudre' came in books of colored paper and pressed against the cheeks or nose, the leaves of powder removed shine. Burnt matchsticks were used to darken eyelashes, and geranium and poppy petals stained the lips.

    Helena Rubenstein Cosmetics

With such primitive cosmetics as these it was inevitable that those who could afford it would flock to Helena Rubenstein's salon when she opened in London.

'She did not have to wait for customers. They came veiled, and no lady carried money with her. But they were prepared to pay considerable sums.'

The sweet pea colour of the clothes was complemented by the lavender smells and until 1901 this was the only admissible perfume for hostesses. Lavender was associated with ladylike qualities. You can read more about perfume developments of the era in Perfumes.

    The Marcel Wave

In her desire to appear natural many ladies had their hair waved. In 1908 Marcel of France introduced a new form of hair waving called the Marcel wave. At a stroke hairdressing techniques in Britain were revolutionized. This technique curled the hair with hot irons in a waved arrangement around the head. As well as Marcel waving, women also dyed their hair.

    Nestle Permanent Hair Wave

By 1906 Charles Nestle invented the permanent wave. An electric heat machine was attached to the hair pads protecting the head and curled the hair.

Right - Picture of Charles Nestle using his electric machine to produce a Nestle waved hairstyle.

    A Woman's Crowning Glory

Until the 1914 war, hair was always considered a woman’s crowning glory. Society ladies dressed it with jewels, feathers, elaborate combs, or an aigrette which was a combination hair ornament made up of all these things.

See hair and hats of the era here.

    Selfridges

By 1909 Selfridges opened in London's Oxford Street and they openly sold cosmetics. Cosmetics displays were openly visible to the customers and were no longer hidden under the counter.

The Influence of Diaghilev's 'The Ballet Russe' and Poiret

Then in 1910 Sergei Diaghilev's Russian ballet became influential in fashion. Influenced by the styles of the ballet, Paul Poiret created designs based on the ballet costumes and these took London by storm. This had a definite influence on make-up and clothes. Ladies began to favour more exotic brighter coloured clothes and this was reflected in more vivid make up. Tattooing became especially popular among society ladies and many a society hostess had lips, pink blushes and dark eyebrows permanently needled in.

    1920s - Suntans

In the 1920s make up began to be used again after many years of not being used. In addition the inter war years showed a great advance in the development of cosmetics. Elizabeth Arden developed cleansing and nourishing creams, tonics and lotions.

At the same time Helena Rubenstein was developing creams to protect the face from the sun. This was welcomed in an era when sun worshipping made fashionable by Coco Chanel, was becoming a craze. Later Rubenstein also began to manufacture face powders and lipsticks. Less makeup was worn in the 1920s than in the 1930s, as youth demanded naturalness and slimming to obtain the boyish silhouette advised in magazines.

1930s - Important Lips and Nails

Lipstick grew redder throughout the 1930s changing colour every year. Lipstick was applied quite thickly. One daily paper commented that kissing had gone out of fashion due to the high cost of lipstick. But lipstick in the 1930s produced an undesirable stain and Oxblood a favourite colour may well have been the cause of such a remark.

Fingernails became scarlet and were grown to extreme length, whilst toenails were contrasted in pink nail enamel. On the cheeks and ear lobes rouge was worn. Eyebrows were plucked to a thinner line in the 1930s than the 1920s. Sometimes they were completely plucked to a thin pencil line substitute, some women even shaved them with disastrous end results as the brows never grew back. There was also a fashion for false eyelashes.

1940s - Make Do With Little Make Up

In the 1940s make was kept to a minimum due to a shortage of constituents and the seeming frivolity of its use.

However hairstyles and the variety of looks they produced were very important. The influence of film stars helped make fashionable, styles such as the Veronica Lake style.

    Fifties Glamour With Max Factor

In the 1950s colour films made an enormous impact on cosmetics. The huge cinema screens illuminated the unblemished appearance of stars and caused the make up artist Max Factor to invent an everyday version of the foundation he used called “Pan Cake”. This was a makeup to gloss over skin imperfections. He also brought out a range of eye shadows and lipsticks. Later in the 50s titanium was added to tone down the brightness of products and this resulted in lips with a pale shimmering gleam. The idea was extended to create frosted nail varnishes of pink, silver and a host of other colours.

The Fifties Look - Spectacles and Hair

One unexpected facial accessory of 50s was spectacles. Frequently these were inlaid with diamante or scattered glitter dust. The exaggerated wings at the outer corners flared in the style of butterfly wings.

In the early 50s the ponytail was a popular youthful hairstyle and it matured into the French pleat. For the more sophisticated a permanent wave in the styles then favoured by Elizabeth Taylor and the young Queen Elizabeth II were universally worn.

Right - Elizabeth Taylor who set trends in hair and make up looks.

As products such as hair lacquer sprays came into general use it was easily possible for ordinary women to create more and more complex hairstyles of height. By the late 50s outrageous backcombed bouffants, beehives, and French pleats led the way for the intricate coiled hairstyles of the 1960s.

    1960s Make Up

In the late 50s the make up company Gala had introduced pale shimmering lipsticks with added titanium. Later Max Factor brought out a colour called Strawberry Meringue which was a pastel pearly pink. They really caught on in the sixties as young girls were frowned upon if they wore brazen red lips, so the softened pink and peach colours were acceptable initially to parents, but then became a trend.

Magazines taught step by step how to use recently introduced lip brushes and young girls began to blend and mix their own lip colours often having first blotted the lips out with Max Factor Pancake make up. Nail polish followed a similar trend with pastel pearl colours being the rage.

Eyes were a main focus and once the film Cleopatra was released showing Elizabeth Taylor with very emphasised eyes everyone learnt to apply eyeliner and socket lines. The models Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy (Leslie Hornby) along with the actress Julie Christie all with their lined eye sockets captured the look that said Sixties Chick with chic.

    Cosmetics by Mary Quant

Quant brought out a range of great and affordable cosmetics in up to the minute formulations with innovative cheek contour shaders and highlighters.

She encouraged users to use make up brushes to apply eyeliner and blusher to achieve the hollow cheek, wide eyed look of the model Twiggy. It really was the best make up to use then if you wanted to get the look just so, as it contained information leaflets with diagrams of positions for the blush shading and highlighting which was all very new at the time to ordinary mortals.

Many of the items she designed bore the Quant daisy logo. Vidal Sassoon gave Quant a new equally fashionable haircut that defined one particular 60's look and spawned many variations.

    ~

    1970s Natural Look

A natural look was important in the mid and late seventies. Eyeliner and painted on eyelashes all became passé and softer looks were fashionable. In the early seventies eyes sometimes had white highlighter on the brow and sometimes soft coloured eye shadows were used around the eyes in a way that had been used for eyeliner. Pearlised liquid eyeshadows were a new innovation and a similar product was promoted in 2001. Very long eyelashes were still desirable. Loose powder went out of fashion and foundations worn alone gave a sheer effect. Lip liner was all the rage.

Right - Charlie's Angels with Flicked up hair styles.

The rough cut blonde flicked hairstyle was popularised by Farrah Fawcett Major (above) from the series 'Charlie's Angels'. Constant use of blow drying, tongs or heated rollers were required to make the hair flick. Other styles included Afro perms which only required washing and forking with a special lifting and separating comb.

    1980s Make Up

Make up came back in fashion. I t was quite a natural lighter look, but in truth strong red lips which matched the many tomato red jackets which abounded were not very natural. Make up was quite defined to match power dressing, but the main feature was the emphasis put on skin care, anti ageing and beauty treatments or therapy. Skin cancer became talked about and a big issue was to tan or not to tan. Many people spent hours under sun beds. Fake tans were improved and bronzing gels and bronzing face powder beads were popular.

A favourite product of the era was Clarins' Beauty Flash instant facial pick me up.

Hair was almost more important than make up. Hair was big and blousy and uplifted with mousse in true Dynasty and Dallas style.

    1990s Skin Care

Yves St Laurent launched his famous Touché Éclat which became a must in many women's handbag. New lighter face skin foundations seemed to be announced every month and the end of the decade saw some very good foundations emerge in the marketplace.

Companies like Marks and Spencer launched great skincare and make up ranges to suit the pockets of everyone. More importantly some of the items they sell can be easily bought from their internet site worldwide and delivered anywhere in the UK.

    2000+ Max Factor's Lipfinity

Staying power of lipsticks improved. In 2000 the Max Factor company launched the Lipfinity lipstick range which consisted of two products. The sticky lipstick is painted onto the lips and allowed to dry for 1 to 4 minutes depending on the amount used. Then the product is sealed with a special separate lip gloss. This wonderful product when correctly applied stays on the lips through normal eating and drinking and even light kissing and dentistry for up to 8 hours.

Only a really greasy cream cake, a heavy steak or oily sauce can dissolve it. To keep it looking fresh it just needs a retouch with the gloss. Those tempted to reapply the colour without cleansing it off first will find that makes it bitty.

If fine lines around the mouth with lipstick runs are your problem this lipstick will transform your life. Be warned it does have a different texture to standard lipsticks and it does take about 3 or 4 days to get used to it. But you'll never see a smear on a cup again. My favourite colours which would suit an ash blonde are 110, 120 and 140 in the red range, 40 and 46 in the pinks and, 50 and 80 in the mauve berry tones. All colours can be mixed on the lips when wet during application so it is possible to make your favourite colour. For more ideas go to How to Assess A Fashion Look.

Since 2001 other manufacturers such as Clarins have launched long lasting lipsticks that really do have better staying power. The Clinique 'stay the day' one is a good, but slightly different alternative to Lipfinity. This is available in the UK now at £14 for a 12gm product, making it much the same price as other products, but with more product in the container.

Recently in Autumn 2005 I tried Maybelline Superstay lipstick and it is every bit as good as Lipfinity. It has a similar format as the Lipfinity of a separate lipstick you paint on and a separate solid gloss sealant. I prefer this format to the long stay lip types that have the wet lipstick and wet gloss in one single case. The Superstay is slightly smaller at 2.6ml of lip colour, but it is also less expensive than Lipfinity by a few pounds too. The colour range is also pretty.

I have also found that you can mix Lipfinity colours with the Superstay colours and use either Stick Gloss Sealant and it still works. However you can't use the liquid gloss sealant from StaytheDay or Avon with either Max Factor Lipfinity or Maybelline Superstay.

    Cleansing

New facial cleansers that washed off were popular in place of cleanse and tone separately.

By 2000 throw away cleanser wipes at low cost averaging 15p -20p a wipe were used by many. Some of the best include those by L'Oreal Plenitude, Nivea and Oil of Olay. These all remove both eye make up and lipstick properly, but gently unlike some of the less adequate products available which can be gentle, but less effective.

The Plenitude and Nivea ones are pre soaked in a dual purpose wet cleanser and toner so they are very swift and easy to use and quickly wipe away face make up. The Olay facial cleansers need to be wetted to release the impregnated product in the wipe and give a wet wash and exfoliation from the irregular surface of the disposable cloth. In truth with all wipes, one cleansing wipe is needed to remove about 90% of the make up and a second wipe to really remove every last trace of deposit.

In general hard traditional bar soaps lost popularity in the bathroom as they were replaced by moisturising bath and shower gels and liquid handwashes and cream cleansing bar products like Dove.

Aromatherapy products for face, body and hair took a huge percentage of the market by 2000 as self indulgent pampering became the norm. Decleor's Aromessence with neroli oil, Elemis milk bath, L'Occitane's pure soap products and Jo Malone's bath essences were typical of the feel good factor products used daily by many.

    Fake Tan Products 2000

Consumers became very aware of skin cancer. Most people now know a victim of melanoma skin cancer. So fake tans and make up bronzing products were even further improved in the 90s, providing effects which were very natural.

The fake tan called St.Tropez usually salon applied was thought one of the best fake tans around. Competition from other great products included the wonderful natural looking low odour Decleor Auto Bronzant and Elemis self tans. Other good products giving great overnight results at home include Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel, Lancôme Soleil Flash Bronzer, Sisley self tanning Gel and St.Tropez Tinted Self Tanning Lotion a D.I.Y version of the salon treatment.

All the products work best if the skin is first scrubbed free of loose dry skin with a skin exfoliant product, showered, dried and then creamed well with a body lotion. The fake tan is best applied with long strokes. Anyone who finds it difficult to apply to areas like feet/ankle bones/elbows where you can get unnatural excess product build up and an over coloured appearance, might find adding a little extra moisturiser to the tanning product makes for a smoother application.

Waxing or shaving of body hair should be done at least 24 hours before application of fake tans on grease free skin.

Pre tan accelerator treatments applied for about a fortnight before a holiday also became popular for those who still liked to sun worship. But by 2002/3 self tanning cubicles became more and more usual throughout the UK. It takes only 5 minutes to sprayed with fake tan by a therapist at St.Tropez Airport 1 and the bronzer used best suits blondes or olive toned skins. These spray treatments are a huge improvement and give a more even tan.

New rivals to St. Tropez include Au Courant also available as a spray treatment or a home DIY kit. Easy application is also possible today using Estee Lauder Sunless Towelettes at around £17. They are great for top ups and for eliminating strap marks in one quick wipe. Any mistakes that are hideous can be removed with St.Tropez's self tan remover at around £15.

    C21st Modern Body Adornment

Permanent body art such as tattoos and more adventurous body piercings are popular with adolescents and adults in their twenties and thirties. An article in 2001 in The Sunday Times suggested that if a female did not have a tattoo, she might well be of a certain generation and probably marked as over 50.

Tattooing is seen as a rite of passage in some circles. Once it was putting up the hair, then having ears pierced and then the audacity of other body piercings. Now the latter are so normal that individuals seek to establish personal identity by individual body markings. Nothing unusual about that in some parts of the world, but formerly frowned upon by a western society that now embraces tattoos.

When recent films with beach scenes were made the producers found it difficult to find nubile young teenage girls without tattoos on their shoulder lines, navels, thigh lines, backs or breasts. The girls were required as extras for a beach scene set in the 1950s and it seems that even the best make up does not give adequate coverage in film close-ups.

    Skin Jewellery

Skin jewellery was briefly popular because it was so simple to apply and so easy to remove. Skin jewellery takes the form of self adhesive crystals that can be arranged in patterns. The best of these are made by Swarovski Crystal Jewelry

and they can be bought from various outlets such as Marks and Spencer, QVC, beauty and jewellery departments. They are more readily available in the festive winter season. Crystals and fake gems are also added to nails today and the nail art produced is often a work of art.

    Body Painting

All over the world body painting of children's faces is common, particularly at school functions and fairs. In the 1990s it became quite normal for men to paint the colours of their football teams in stripes or patterns on their faces or scalps. This followed the film Braveheart.

The first time we recall seeing this form of painting in the street beyond the tribal effect seen in anthropological films and that worn as media art by the model Verushcka, was in 1977. A small number of the huge crowds greeting H. R. H Queen Elizabeth II outside Buckingham Palace during her Jubilee used Union Jack colours in a flag arrangement, on their hair and faces. After the wedding of Prince Charles the fashion for face painting seemed set for festive occasions and the film Braveheart took it into the sports field.

    Henna

For several years bindi or henna tattooing has been seen in the UK. Madonna adopted it as body decoration a few years ago and it became popular with many nationalities.

    Eyebrow Shaping

Now the latest trend is to have professional eyebrow shaping which lifts and contours the face providing a frame. It gives the instant effect of a mini face lift and involves waxing and plucking of the brow hairs for the smoothest outline. In the hands of skilled technician, the eastern method of threading is considered to be the most superior way of removing brow hair.A brief history of Cosmetics?

Could you tell me something about the history of Cosmetics?

    Hi there,

The history of cosmetics is very interesting and old.

I've read a very good article about this:

A lot of criticism of cosmetics has come from a variety of sources, including feminists, animal rights activists, authors and public interest groups. In the western world, the advent of cosmetics was in the middle ages, although typically restricted to use within the upper classes. The Romans and Ancient Egyptians used cosmetics containing poisonous mercury and often lead. During the 20th century, the popularity of cosmetics increased rapidly. Many companies have catered to this expanding market by introducing more flavored lipsticks and glosses, cosmetics packaged in glittery, sparkly packaging and marketing and advertising using young models. While there is assurance from the largest cosmetic companies that their various ingredients are safe to use, there is a growing preference for cosmetics that are without any ';synthetic'; ingredients, especially those derived from petroleum. Even though many products in cosmetics are regulated, there are many health concerns that come from harmful chemicals in these products. The manufacture of cosmetics is currently dominated by a small number of multinational corporations that originated in the.....

Have the goods shipped to Bongo’s warehouse and they will consolidate all your orders and have them shipped to your door. You can save hundreds of dollars. If you find a company that doesn’t take international credit cards, they will make the purchase for you for a small fee. They have saved me hundreds…possibly thousands of dollars by now.

Cosmetic tattoo how old you have to be with parental consent?(Canada)?

I agree you should be older for cosmetic tattoos. Unlike body art, these tattoos fade a lot more and over the years require a lot of touch ups. The skin can only hold so much color over time.

Unless you have a physical problem like alopecia or habitual problem like trichotillomania (chronic hair pulling) I would advise you to wait if you came into our studio.Cosmetic tattoo how old you have to be with parental consent?(Canada)?

If you have parental consent it doesn't matter how old you are, BUT the professionals doing it will tell you that being older is better (like in you 20's).

What are some cosmetic brands that do not do animal testing (available in Canada)?

    Avon
    clinique is good.
    Avon and Mark
Lipsmackers (the lip gloss brand) does not test on animals. I believe that if you look on the container of the product you're using it often says if the company does not. I'm pretty sure that the PETA website has a listing, also. (www.peta2.org)

  • Can i be 15 to get cosmetic surgery in canada?

Agreed. I think 18 is generally the age most doctors require that you be. This is with SOME exceptions, for example, a lot of younger people get rhinoplasty or otoplasty (ear pinning). Of course, this is often for various reasons, possibly includin health problems or facial trauma. Those are also not body areas that change and grow like, say, breasts or hips.

However, I think the true answer is it's up to the individual doctor and your parents or guardian. Can i be 15 to get cosmetic surgery in canada?
Cosmetic surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her breast reduction, tummy tuck and facelift surgery in India by the company called Forerunners Healthcare .The Price for the surgery she paid in India was very less. She paid 30% of the cost she was quoted in America.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. They arrange cosmetic and plastic surgery for foreigners in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as the breast reduction, tummy tuck, facelift and other cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps. Can i be 15 to get cosmetic surgery in canada?
You really shouldn't get cosmetic surgery until your body's stopped growing. If you get it now, as you get older it might not sit right (breasts can become lopsided or lumpy) and muscle and fat will try to go around whatever you have implanted or shaved down. You might be able to get it, but you should really wait until you're older--of course, a doctor can tell you more about how much the surgery will affect your body and it depends on what you're having done, but make sure you see a few doctors and get a good idea of the procedure.

Are e.l.f. (eyes, lips, face) cosmetics sold in Canada?

I want to try them out because they're so cheap and I've heard some good things about them, except I've also heard that ordering them online is not the best, especially to Canada because of the long waiting time and the quality of the products shipped. I'd much rather go into a store and purchase them myself, being able to see then. Does anyone know of any stores that carry them in Canada? Are e.l.f. (eyes, lips, face) cosmetics sold in Canada?
I live in Toronto and I only have seen few (and I mean very few) ELF products in Winners at Bloor Street. But you know Winners doesn't always carry the same items - so I doubt they still have it. While ELF is very inexpensive, the $15 shipping fee to Canada is definitely a bummer.

They are a Beauty Company like Mary Kay, but focus on Health and Wellness in their products. They are a fast growing company are are in US, Canada, UK, and Australia.

$29.00 to start and you do not need inventory to work this business.

They offer all the information online about the company, requirements and benefits. They have huge amounts of training online free and have a great modern success plan that works in the real world or online.

I had not heard of them, but am so glad that I did when I was looking at selling Avon or Mary Kay.

I wish you the best! What is the sign up cost to join Mary Kay Cosmetics in Ontario Canada?
Trust me you do not want to sell mary kay! My family has sold Mary Kay over the years and it does not make you money! You have to buy inventory and with so many people who sell it, there is alot of competition and also people can buy it cheaper on ebay and often do. If you want to sell makeup, I highly recommend selling Faerie Organic www.faerieorganic.com Their products are amazing! I am a professional makeup artist and I use their mineral makeup on all my clientel, after I show them how good they look in it they always end up buying products, as it covers redness really well, is all natural *GREEN* (which is really hot right now) people love it, you can make good money. All you have to do is go to their website and fill out the comment form that you are interested in selling and they will give you a wholesale price list, I think the order minimum is like $100.00 which I 'm not sure of because I usually spend more than that, so I can buy some for myself as well. Look into it, its an untapped market and people are really wanting more natural products right now, you'll be set apart from the crowd.
You will need to go to www.marykay.ca for CANADA.

    ********************************

Why was there a thumb down on this? All Canadians have to go through the Canadian website and that is the www.marykay.ca website. USA residents have to go through www.marykay.com.

Each country has a specific website they must use to sign up as a consultant.

    Hi Isis,

The starter kit is $150 plus tax and it has around $400 retail worth of product (even wholesale the cost would be around $200) so you're getting it at a realy good deal!

To be considered active you need to have inventory that costs around $200-$300 (it's your store).

You just missed the $99 Special Sign-up with MK but let me know if you are still interested in signing because if you are I will give you a bonus MK bathrobe (suggested retail price of $50). Contact me via www.marykay.ca/mboyle Best of luck!
